South Cook Area Wide Institute Day 2026
Monday November 2, 2026 12:10pm - 1:00pm CST
In the age of 1:1 devices, remote learning, and an explosion of education technology tools, the landscape of student data privacy is more complex and critical than ever. While many perceive student data privacy and cybersecurity as an "IT problem," this presentation will help all staff understand that it's everyone’s responsibility.

This session will move beyond the common legal buzzwords, such as FERPA and SOPPA, to explore the real-world implications of handling student data. We'll delve into the human factor behind cybersecurity incidents, discussing how everyday actions like using weak passwords, clicking suspicious links, and sharing files on unapproved platforms can lead to significant vulnerabilities.

Through compelling stories and practical examples, attendees will learn:
  • The fundamental legal frameworks of student data privacy and why they are more than just a hindrance.
  • The potential long-term implications of data breaches for students, including identity theft and compromised future opportunities.
  • Actionable, common-sense security practices that every educator can implement immediately, such as using passphrases, enabling multi-factor authentication, and being mindful of public Wi-Fi.
This presentation aims to empower every school staff member—from teachers to administrators—with the knowledge and awareness needed to be a proactive line of defense in protecting student data. It’s a call to action to shift the culture of data privacy from a policy to a personal commitment.
